Backtrack your Youtube history and you will find an unnerving video of young man Matt Diaz’s weight loss story, where he made an emotional plea about his 270lb weight loss journey that left him with excess sagging skin that broke his confidence. Given that he once weighed 495lb, his progress is commendable, and yet, it is only surgery that can help restore the unsightly folds of fat that now hang low around Matt’s chest and mid-section.
Back then, we handed you a checklist of exercises that would tone your arms, stomach and legs, but these need to be done right through your weight loss journey, so that you shed the pounds and gain muscle tone simultaneously. However, there are many other factors that contribute to excess loose skin, and remedial measures that can sometimes serve as prevention, but very rarely as a cure.
Understand The Skin You’re In
What most people don’t understand is that sagging skin is a result of weight gain, not weight loss. Our body is inherently accommodating and adapts to keep up with the changes. So, in order to make space for the excess fat, your skin stretches to the limit when you’ve been overindulging. When you lose weight, the extra skin is of no use any longer, but has nowhere else to go either. It is also at this point that it loses the elasticity to bounce back into shape, which causes it to hang and produce stretch marks that are nothing but collagen deficient lines. The sag-curve also depends on age, muscle mass and genetics.
Luckily, some of the most effective remedies to reduce their visibility are available right in your kitchen. Take for example, potatoes. Take a fresh potato and cut it into a thick slice (1cm), ensuring there is enough juice. Rub this slice over your stretch marks and let the juice dry naturally. Wash with warm water. Use this twice a day. The potato juice is rich in vitamins and minerals, which can restore your skin cells.
You can alternately apply olive oil on your stretch marks and leave it on overnight everyday. Wash it off with regular water the next morning. The oil is rich in vitamin E, which helps rebuild the skin’s collagen.
Pacing your weight loss, building lean muscle mass, eating collagen-boosting foods, and strength training are the other things you need to look into, in order to keep the excess skin intact. Let’s discuss them at length, shall we?
