Many people have assumed that all they need to do is hop on the scales and that will tell them everything they need to know, however a scale will only tell you the total mass of your body not the percentage of fat, muscle and even water. In fact most changes in the short term in body-weight are simply a result of water shifting in the body. The weight on the scale also fails to tell you whether you are losing fat or muscle mass.
